Choose the Right Transfer From Bole Airport Into Addis Ababa
Compare hotel pickups, airport meter taxis and app-based rides from Addis Ababa Bole Airport, including options for Bole, Piazza and late arrivals.

For a first arrival, the lowest-friction choice is usually a transfer confirmed by your hotel. If that is unavailable, Ethiopian Airlines says meter taxis can be hired inside the Arrivals Hall before you exit. An app-based ride is useful when your phone is connected and you can coordinate a precise pickup point.
Bole International Airport (ADD) is within Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines places it about 6 km from the central Bole Road area and says international flights use Terminal 2 while domestic flights use Terminal 1. A Bole hotel therefore involves less cross-city travel than accommodation around Piazza, but traffic makes a fixed journey-time promise unhelpful. Give a booked driver your flight number and destination, not just an expected meeting time. See the airline’s current Bole Airport guide.
The options at a glance
| Transfer | Best suited to | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel pickup | First visit, night arrival, family or substantial luggage | Must be confirmed in advance; charges and waiting policies vary |
| Arrivals Hall meter taxi | No advance booking or a changed arrival time | Confirm the vehicle, meter, payment method and destination before leaving |
| App-based taxi | Travellers with working data and a precise destination pin | Calls and pickup coordination can add friction |
| Pre-booked private vehicle | Groups, extra luggage or a required child seat | Check the provider and obtain the complete terms in writing |
| Bus or minibus | Not a good default for a first arrival | No clear, current official visitor information on an airport route, stop or luggage arrangements |
Hotel pickup: simplest when properly confirmed
Ask your accommodation directly, even if a booking platform does not mention a shuttle. Confirm:
- whether the transfer is free or paid, including the total price and currency;
- the terminal and exact meeting point;
- the driver’s name or the sign they will display;
- what happens if the flight is delayed;
- capacity for every passenger and bag;
- whether any requested child seat is confirmed.
Procedures differ by property. Dreamliner Hotel’s transfer page, for example, says guests must request its complimentary shuttle at least 24 hours before arrival and that its driver meets passengers in the Arrivals Hall with a hotel sign. Treat that as one hotel’s policy, not an airport-wide rule. “Airport shuttle available” is not a confirmed booking.
A pre-arranged handoff is particularly useful after dark. UK travel advice reports petty theft around Bole International Airport and recommends using road transport where possible, especially after dark. It also advises travellers to use airport buses or taxis organised by a hotel or travel company, or to choose yellow or app-based taxis when booking independently. Keep valuables out of sight and vehicle doors locked; check the current UK safety guidance shortly before travel.
Arrivals Hall meter taxi: the no-booking fallback
Ethiopian Airlines says airport meter taxis are available for hire in the Arrivals Hall before passengers leave the terminal. The same hall has hotel contact booths, telecom services, forex banks, ATMs and free Wi-Fi, according to its airport guide.
Use the official in-terminal option rather than responding to an unsolicited approach outside. Show the hotel’s full name, phone number and map pin: “Bole” is not a complete destination, and a hotel near Bole Medhanealem requires a different trip from one in Piazza.
Before boarding, confirm:
- that it is a licensed, private taxi and will not collect other passengers;
- that the meter will be used;
- the accepted payment method and whether you need small notes;
- any airport or baggage charge;
- the car and driver details.
Canada’s Ethiopia travel advice recommends licensed taxis selected by a reputable hotel or restaurant or found at an official stand, advises against street hails, and tells passengers to request the meter. For app bookings, it says to match the driver and licence plate and share the ride status with a contact. Consult the current Canadian advisory before departure.
Do not plan around an old fare quoted online in dollars. The airline does not publish a citywide taxi tariff on its airport page, while exchange rates and operating conditions change. A working meter and payment terms confirmed before departure are more useful than a stale estimate.
App-based taxi: useful when your phone is ready
RIDE is one local booking option. The developer’s App Store listing says it operates in Addis Ababa, accepts advance bookings and offers sedans, minivans and minibuses. It also gives 8294 as its dispatch short code. These are company claims, not guarantees that a car, a particular vehicle class or an English-speaking driver will be available when you land; the short code may also require local mobile service.
If using an app:
- install and register before flying;
- save the hotel name, phone number and map pin offline;
- check that your phone can receive local calls;
- ask the hotel whether it recommends a particular airport pickup point;
- match the driver, car and plate to the booking before boarding;
- share the trip details with a contact;
- keep the Arrivals Hall taxi as a fallback.
Airport Wi-Fi may help with the initial booking, but do not make the entire plan depend on connectivity. Canada’s advisory says mobile and internet services can be disrupted, while UK advice warns that GPS can be unreliable in and around Addis Ababa. Keep an offline map, address screenshot and hotel phone number.
Why public transport is not the first-arrival default
Unofficial guides mention buses or minibuses around the airport, but there is not enough current operator information to give a newly arrived visitor a dependable route, boarding point, timetable and luggage plan. Canada’s travel advice describes most public transport as unregulated and unsafe, and advises using a hotel or tour-operator airport transfer.
This does not establish that no local service exists. It means a visitor should not build the first transfer around incomplete instructions, particularly with luggage, after dark or when the destination is away from a familiar corridor. Arrange a vehicle for arrival and investigate everyday city transport after checking current conditions locally.
If Addis Ababa is only a connection
Before paying for a transfer, check whether Ethiopian Airlines already includes one. The airline says passengers on a single ticket, with both the inbound and outbound flights operated by Ethiopian Airlines and a connection of 8 to 24 hours, qualify for its complimentary stopover package. The benefit typically includes a hotel, meals and transfers. The voucher is normally issued at origin check-in or can be requested at the Addis Ababa transit desk.
Eligibility and entry requirements still matter, so confirm the latest terms on the airline’s Addis Ababa stopover page.
A simple arrival plan
Before flying: request a hotel transfer and retain its written confirmation. If none is available, install an app if useful, but keep the in-terminal meter taxi as the fallback.
After baggage reclaim: for a hotel pickup, match the sign and driver details to the hotel’s message. For a taxi, hire the official meter option before leaving the terminal. Avoid unsolicited approaches.
Before the vehicle moves: verify the destination pin, driver, car, meter and payment arrangement. Keep valuables out of sight, doors locked and the accommodation’s number accessible.
The practical choice is between a pre-confirmed handoff, an official airport meter taxi and an app booking that depends on your phone. For a first or late arrival, consider them in that order.
